Fred,
Depending on what type of message board you go with, most of them offer the option to have a forum be open to anyone (meaning anyone can post) or forums where only registered members can post.
The registered members would also be able to see and post on the non-member forum and threads. So people that are thinking of getting into the business could post questions, and have them answered by folks who are already in the business.
As for software support, I think that should be a totally separate forum, where clients and other people who buy the software to use for themselves ... could post questions about installation, using the software, etc.
The message board for members only could be indexed so that the SE's don't follow it (meta name="robots" content="index, nofollow"), making it where it doesn't show up on Google and other SE's when someone types in 'home inventory' when doing a search. This way the forum is kept sort of hidden away from the general public.
