Trying to figure out a private adoption in 1925. The State of New York gave my mother (now deceased) a birth certificate that indicated she was born on March 24, 1925 at Plaza Hospital which was located on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. After writing to the State of New York they disclosed that her mother was unwed, age 22. No father listed. Anyone ever hear of this hospital? I'm guessing it might have been a private place for women to give birth for adoption purposes. My mother's adoptive parents came from Philadelphia to adopt her and, as was the custom, never told she was adopted. She found out in 1986 when she needed a birth certificate to get a passport. Any assistance would be appreciated. |
