Fort Hawkins Memorial Day Salute, Monday, May 31, 2010, 12:00 Noon - 5:00 pm, No Admission, Emery Highway, Macon, GA
Following a brief ceremonial flag placing at Fort Hill Cemetery at 12:00 Noon, the Fort Hawkins Commissions invites the public to visit Fort Hawkins to remember Memorial Day at the early American U.S. Army Frontier Fort and Macon's "Birthplace." During Fort Hawkins' 22 years of existence (1806-1828) it is estimated that over 100 soldiers died while in service at the fort and those buried at Fort Hill have never been recognized or remembered until now. The three story Blockhouse Replica and archaeological dig site will be open for touring throughout the afternoon. |
