 Subject: 1940s AC Rims - what was factory paint/coating?

I have a 1948 AC G that I am restoring - would love for it to be as original as possible. Everyone today paints their rims with silver/aluminum colored paint...but was that original?? I suspect the factory rims were not painted, but instead galvanized?? Can anyone educate me??
