Dugan's memorial and paddle yesterday was a great event. Several hundred showed up at Ponto Beach, Leucadia, to give Dugan the next wave. His friends from Grandview had shirts printed up with "GSA" (Grandview Surfing Assn) on the front and a picture of Dugan charging backside across a double-overhead left at Grandview on the back. People from all facets of Dugan's life talked, focusing primarily on family and friends, and Dugan's considerable exploits surfing, diving, sailing, hang gliding, driving cars and traveling.
Me, I met and talked story with Tom Rice for over an hour. Tom is a spry 82 and now lives in Indio, California. Tom has some incredible (and unpublishable) stories of the South Bay (and Dale) going back seventy years.
I then had lunch with members of the Yeakel and Rice families and the South Bay stories continued.
I was stoked to be there.
