Hi there, I've been looking all over the internet for some idea of what might be going on with my toe... I have to go see my primary MD to get a podiatry referral and they can't get me in for a few weeks since it's not a big deal to them so I found my way here hoping for some guidance.

I have sharp pains and periodic numbness in my middle toe. This occurs whether I am wearing heels, flat shoes or even barefoot. When I wear heels (which is not often)this toe makes a "clicking" sound, it's strange, not like a regular joint cracking. This toe is starting to curl under my second toe and doesn't go flat even when i am standing with no shoes. Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on here?

Considerations of cause of non-traumatically induced pain and numbness of the 3rd toe should, of course, include the very common, Morton's neuroma. But this is generally rather easily confirmed or ruled out via physical examination. I have noted a clicking sensation in such cases, perhaps similar to what you report, but when I examine the foot and squeeze the metatarsal together from the medial and lateral borders of the foot at the level of the neck of the 1st and 5th metatarsal, but such is not really diagnostic. Neuromata, though, are pathologies of sensory nerves and contraction of the digits is not something that is routinely seen.

But all of this ican only be conjecture based on your description, which may or may not be either complete or technically correct, so I would not suggest that you take to heart anything which you receive in the way of commentary here, or attempt any self-treatment which may possibly be inappropriate, based on same.

I think it best that you wait to see the podiatrist.
