I was wondering, because I had a bunion on each foot taken off, do they grow back? If the answer is yes and if it's because it would because of the way the surgery was performed, than what would the surgeron be doing incorrect to cause it to grow back? Please respond, Thanks, Millie

First of all, a bunion is a deformity and surgery is generally is aimed at CORRECTING, not TAKING OFF the deformity . . unless you're speaking of just removing the excessive bone which may constitute a "simple" bunion "bump." In neither case is it normal for a bunion, properly corrected and with appropriate follow-up as required, recur. Proper correction would necessitate an accurate assessment of the underlying patho-mechanics and the resultant deformity. Selection of the optimum procedure for whatever be the particular nitty-gritty of the deformity and, of course, technically skilled surgery and biomechanical follow-up when required are key components of a successful and permanent bunion correction. But nobody . . not even surgeons are not perfect, and the presurgical assessment may be flawed, as well as the procedure itself. Nothing in medicine comes with a guarantee, and clearly, not all surgery or medical treatment is 100 percent effective. In my hands, based on my known successes and failures, bunion surgeries have been on the order of 85-90 percent successful. As to whether some that had I judged successful were in need of revision years later without my knowledge, I have on way of knowing.
