Unless there is some direct local irritation of the skin or tissues, burning sensations are generally generated by some nerve abnormality. But if your problem occurs for only 5-10 seconds at at time, it will be difficult to ascertain its cause, as it will never be able to be examined while the sensation is present unless, by repositioning the foot or body, or creating a predisposing condition or situation, the sensation can be reliably elicited. Certainly, one of the most common problems causing pain in the heel is plantar fasciitis. As you already think it may be that, why have you not had it professionally checked out? As far as any meaningful thoughts as to what it might be, without lots more information and the all important hands-on examination, such guesses would serve no purpose, especially as you are considering seeing a doctor anyhow. I would recommend your seeing either a podiatrist of an orthopedist who specializes in problems of the foot.
