Dear Linda

Greetings from Down Under

Your cracked/dry heels are probably as a result of wearing backless sandals. If you need to wear sandals, try sandals such as Finn Comfort or Birkenstock, but ensure that there is a back in the shoe. This will prevent your heels being excessively exposed, and it will control heel movement.

Keep a moisture cream up to the cracked heels. There are plenty of them on the market, but in my humble opinion, stay away from Sorbolene types as this only forms a barrier between your feet and the air, rather than be absorbed by your dry skin. We have a brand here called Eulactol. Ver popular.

I read that you have had surgery to one foot only. This leads me to think that that there is a bi-mechanical problem with your gait, which can be addressed by foot orthotics (or have you been down this road)? A visit to a Certified Pedorthist or a DPM might help you here.

I wish you well.

Regards

I have had approximately 9 surgeries on 1 foot along in the past 2 years starting with a bunion and hammertoe and progressing to each toe. The last surgery was done in January of this year involving bunion removal beside the big toe and the little toe and each toe developing into hammer toes. Consequently, I haven't been able to wear any shoe but a sandal as it hurts to have anything on my toes. My heels are extremely rough and dry and cracking. I could use them as sand paper. What can be done so that I can wear shoes again like a normal person and also take care of the rough feet.
