1. Underwater photography is an integral part of diving for those that want to bring back the photos to friends and family in order to share their experiences. “A picture is worth a thousand words” or more if you are in a world where most people never get to go or see unless it’s with Mike Nelson or yourself. So why not bring back the best you can? This series of tips will hopefully help you do that while letting you enjoy a sport and an environment that can be spectacular as.

It is important to remember what makes diving fun for you. These are the images that will convey those same feelings to the viewer of your pictures. These will be the images that go along with your story of adventure. The pictures that you take then should have a subject and a perspective. They should not distract or confuse the viewer , but help tell the story. They should therefore be simple shots of things that people can recognize. Sometimes as a diver we will take thing for granted “I have seen that on every dive” well the non-diver may have never seen one except on TV. So, take nothing for granted and look at everything. Go slow and improve your diving skills! The more you dive the better your skill will become. Slow and steady is my first tip! You should work on buoyancy as your number one tool. You will need to hover over a subject and steady your body that will keep your camera still. The less movement and more control the better the picture. Putting a camera in the mix with all of the other equipment changes things. This is why you need to practice your skills with your camera.

It is important to know your equipment and how it operates. So practice your skills with your camera as often as possible and you will see a marked improvement in your pictures. You will turn “snap shots” into underwater photographs.
