I have talked about dive skills as number one. It is also number two, but this time it is about seeing your subject. If you never see it you can’t photograph it. Once you have become comfortable with your skills then slow it down and you will see more. Many sea creatures are sensitive to movement. It is their defense mechanism that keeps them alive. The rule of the sea is “the big ones eat the little ones” so if you bully your way around you will scare everything that you would like to shoot including your body. Go slow and see more and if you see more there are more opportunities to get those great pictures. In the water environment there is life everywhere so look everywhere and you will end up enjoying the diving experience and get better pictures. The ocean is a big place and you cannot see it in one dive. One place is usually as good as the next depending on what you are looking for.
