I have the sweetest two year old German Shepherd, he's about 75 pounds. He is the most gentle dog when it comes to humans, including children. He is never aggressive to my wife or me, or any other human for that matter. He also plays very well with my friends silver lab (he is actually very protective of her) and my sisters yellow lab, and a couple of other dogs he knows.
But when my wife or myself walk/rollerblade with him, and he sees another dog, he tries to go after that dog. He doesn't growl, he just tries to run towards the dog, and we try to yell NO, and snap his choke collar, but usually he jumps in the air to get at the dog.
Also, I have stopped taking him to the dog park because he tries to be very dominate, and even though i know that the growling and noise when he plays with the other dog is natural, other people get freaked out when its their dog.
He has had two unfriendly encounters in his life with other dogs, and those happened outside my town home, and it involved nipping by my dog.
Do you have any suggestions as to how I can curb my dog's aggression towards other unknown dogs? I just ordered a dog whistle, can I use that as a tool to curb his dog aggression? |
