Hello Kristin,
I was curious after reading your message because it is somewhat similar to events I'm trying to figure out on both sides of my family. So I looked for and found the 1940 census you mentioned. Some entries in the McCready household were difficult to read. The official transcription seems to contain errors. The foster daughter's name was transcribed as "Fenence" (?), but when I zoomed in and played with the contrast, etc., it seemed clear that her name was "Florence." The age was correct: the census was done almost exactly one year after the date you reported. The biggest problem I had was figuring out what the census taker was doing with the surnames. The transcription gives her surname as Carter: apparently the vague markings were taken as repeating the surname of the boy above her (his first name looks to me to be Vernon). But the ambiguous markings aren't quotation marks, nor do they spell Carter. Have you been able to obtain or create a clearer copy of her census entry? I was simply trying to check the name since you seemed a bit unsure that the information you had was completely accurate |
