To Whom It May Concern:
On December 4, 2009 I took 8 cub scouts to visit Ft. Hawkins in the effort to fulfill one of their bear scout requirements. I must admit that I did not have any idea what lay in store for us that evening. Pulling into the fort we were met by Mr. Marty Willet- who was coordinating the evening events. Marty’s enthusiasm, knowledge, and passion for the fort were quickly evident to all of us and infectious. As the sun went down over Macon- he brought the fort to life for the 8 scouts and over 15 parents and siblings that were in attendance. We learned about the history of the area, the challenges the early settlers faced, and about blacksmithing. The evening culminated in a candle light tour of the fort and cider and cookies: far surpassing all of our expectations.
I want to formally thank Mr. Willet (and company) for their services. What started out as a simple completion of a requirement quickly became a highlight of the year. I commend you all on your dedication and commitment for keeping this great Macon landmark alive.
