On Sunday Bill Williams and I started talking about how few opportunities there were for the women of our class to compete athletically and how Title IX has improved things for following generations. As Bill put it, our women were "robbed" of that opportunity. Most of us guys were pretty ignorant of the athletic talents of our women classmates and yesterday Bill and I started asking who might have shone on athletic fields or floors had they been given the chance. I was aware Sue Stewart was a swimmer and Carol Urquhart was a skater, but other than those and the leaps, carwheels and flips the cheerleaders did I had no idea.
Someone said Debbie Janik was a pretty good basketball player and a couple of ladies said Sherry Gruber was a fast runner. Chris Malone wrote me to say that Kim Craig was a pretty good soccer player. (Bill told me Kim's daughters were terrific soccer players, one of them all-state in Ohio, but the accomplishments of our offspring is a different topic.)
Who else would have like to have played a competitive sport 40 years ago and what would your sport of choice have been? If you know of the athletic talents of our women classmates who might not speak up for themselves, tell us about them. |
