YN1,
I used to be an AC1 and went through what he did about 8 years ago. Here's what happened to me. I chose to get out of the AC rate by admitting to a fear of controlling. In doing this it is an automatic force conversion but at the E6 level it is very difficult to find a rate. I tried for IT/LN/NC/YN and finally with the help of an MACM got into the MA rate after the AC detailer and went to the ECM and said "who wants him" and the AB detailer raised hand and for one day I was an ABE till this MACM who used to be a ECM made a calll and it was changed. This process took 18 months. I lucked out and got MA and was one for four years till I went NC. Due to the many rate changes and other things I've slowed my chances for Chief quite a bit but I still have a couple of years to make it. Some advice I would give this guy is to do the rate training manuals and show some serious initiative for what eve rate he wants. If he just sits back he'll end up being separated or a rate he won't be happy in. I was Zone B when I crossed to lucked out. Zone C is rough, but he's faced with what some overmanned rates will be but in a different situations. Best of luck.
