How interesting to come across this post on the front page! Since I got into hiking a few months ago, I've discovered that I have the same callus in the same spot that becomes sensitive after about 4 miles of hiking. It's under the big toe, and just above the joint and a little on the outside of the toe.
I did a lot of searching until I found this:
http://www.triggerpointbook.com/mortons.htm
And found out that the callus that I've always had under my 5th metatarsal pinky toe (but has never given me any pain whatsoever) was one of the characteristics of this Morton's Foot condition. HOWEVER, another thing I have noticed is that I do NOT have any callus under the 2nd metatarsal as is described on that webpage. And oddly enough, that one is supposed to be the heaviest, and it simply doesn't exist on my foot..
So is it still Morton's Foot if everything fits except for the absence of that callus under the 2nd metatarsal? I put one of those Dr. Scholls round ring callus cushions on my insoles on my last hike (didn't have the molefoam padding the site mentions) and it did actually provide some relief. I had a 6 mile hike that day and didn't feel much sensitivity that I normally would on a hike of that distance.
Just looking for some input here about the absence of that callus.. |
