 Subject: Burning sensation in foot

Can you advise? The left side of my left foot has been getting progressively more uncomfortable over the last month. There is a red area which is warm to touch and has a burning sensation. My toes become numb on occasions and now I'm getting discomfort from my ankle to my knee. I am a 45 year old woman who is generally well and healthy except for an unstable spine which has caused problems for many years. Is the foot problem a side-symptom of my back problems or something new?
