Mike, trust me, even though you have a completely different foot condition than I had, I have had the external fixation device.
It is as you describe it, one can weightbear within two weeks of having the device/s surgically implanted.
But, only on the heel and with a cam walker that extended just above the calf of my leg.
My experience was much better healing when I took that very, very minimally and cautiously!
Life is not a breeze with this device.
There is swelling and a lot of blood rushing to the foot when you put your foot down.
One is essentially uncomfortable the whole time and only the foot up and resting is comfortable. At about one month, I was very comfortable.
Also, the areas around these large screws are always open until they are removed and stitches are used to close the wounds. This is done at six weeks.
So, for six weeks one is open to infections and especially you.
I did have either a reaction to the pins (10 to 14% nickle)or an scary infection post op on the second foot.
It was resolved with antibiotics.
So, the key here is that unlike internal pins these huge screws are open around them for six weeks.
I was not prepared for the extent of what happened to me.
However, hopefully this will help you.

My POD is at the forefront of using these devices.
He lectures on them or so I was told two years ago.
I will be very honest you will not be running around after this procedure.
