Madam,

I always enjoy the comments of those who can conjure up no real retort to instead institute personal attacks (e.g. "control freak," "issue with self-esteem") in lieu of a reasonable defense of their errant behavior. You appear to mistake whatever expertise which you allege your POD might possess with personal expertise on your part. That's an odd sort of transference. Furthermore, if having had a procedure . . . EVEN one which might be identical to that which a questioner is about to have, affords that person actual "expertise" on that procedure, perhaps you should be on the lecture circuit instead of an obscure Internet forum. As I had stated, whether or not the information you gave satisfies the questioner's desires is not a relevant issue. What IS the relevant issue is whether or not it is appropriate for a lay person or even a professional who is not privy to the individual case and/or has the expertise to comment should be giving definitive comments as to what the questioner, himself, will experience with any particular treatment, simply because that is what the responder experienced. It is NOT! Such is not only inappropriate but potentially detrimental to the existing doctor/patient relationship, as, in the likely event, that the questioner's care and experience does not parallel that of the responder, he might well have unnecessary concerns and loss of confidence in his own doctor. I can assure you that his doctor would not appreciate your pre-defining the post-operative process and results of his surgery to be. In respect to how you perceive my view of the questioners in general, you mistakenly use the word "dumb" in place of the accurate "ignorant" (not as in unintelligent, but as in uninformed). Medicine is often not a science based on logic, and the art in administering it requires expertise beyond what a lay person perceives him/herself to possess. As an ethical and knowledgeable doctor, it is part of my professional responsibility to at least voice my opinion in attempts to protect an unsuspecting and often vulnerable public from the sort of information which you are foisting here without benefit of knowledge beyond your one experience. Beyond that, I have no enforceable control, as you seem to assert, over the situation. No one would entertain going to a doctor with the knowledge that he/she had only one experience in treating his/her particular condition. It is not my purpose here to entertain your delusions of grandeur in respect to your having expertise in areas in which you clearly cannot. So even if Mike is desirous of such information, it is my responsibility here to make him aware of the inappropriateness of it and the risks he takes by taking it with more than a gain of salt.
