Today was another glorious day for the Fort Hawkins Commission, with this and all other such days, only accenting the need to get the Fort Hawkins Historic Site open to the public as detailed in our Master Plan, available on this very web site. Our small but dedicated group first enjoyed the Hawkins National Monument in downtown Roberta for a group photo opportunity and then headed out to the Flint River site of Hawkins' past Creek Agency and his present distinguished gravesite. While at this Crawford County Park everyone concured that it had never looked so good, and we helped by giving the Col.'s white marble Veteran's headstone a good cleaning and replacing several missing stones. While there the group discussed his former homesite and "model farm" and the need to not only preserve and promote the site (as we will continue to do), but also to conduct the much needed archaeological research to this nearly pristine and oh so historic site of early American history. We were all awestruck by the fall line vista, seen at Fort Hawkins, that was also found at the Creek Agency, with its pastoral and wilderness panorama a reminder of the same view Col. Hawkins had two hundred plus years ago. |
