The grave site of Col. Benjamin Hawkins gravesite, located southwest of Roberta in Crawford County, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 10, according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Historic Preservation Division.
The National Register of Historic Places is the country’s official list of historic buildings and sites worthy of preservation.
The grave is located on a small knoll on the eastern bluff above the Flint River, accessed from Benjamin Hawkins Road off Ga. 128. Hawkins was buried at the site in 1816, and the fieldstone monument marking his grave was added in 1931, according to the news release.
The colonial fort that essentially became the birthplace of Macon is named for Hawkins. In 1803, Hawkins settled in present-day Crawford County on about 8,000 acres located on both sides of the Flint River.
