In the 11/20/09 Telegraph Letters-to-the-Editor: "Thanks for the help" - The Fort Hawkins Commission witnesseed true American patriotism with its successful 4th Annual Fort Hawkins Veterans Day Salute, despite the miserable weather conditions that prevailed but not prevented this display of national pride as we remembered all of our nation's veterans at the very place the first American veterans served in Middle Georgia. The fort's namesake, Col. Benjamin Hawkins, served on Gen. Washington's Revolutionary War staff, this making him one of the nation's very first veterans. We must thank the Nathaniel Macon Chapter NSDAR for its moving and solemn official flag retirement ceremony and the 12 participating patriotic organizations, who are constant reminders of our veterans' service. We also thank Boy Scout Troop 911 for its excellent assistance in the ceremony and Ray Lawrence for his most stirring rendition of "Taps" in conclusion. The Commission further thanks all those who braved the weather to honor and remember our veterans on Veterans Day. Our all-volunteer city commission is dedicated to rebuilding the early American frontier fort and developing a daily arachaeological and living history program that will be an educational and economic stimulus for all of Middle Georgia.
