Don't feel bad - I'm 34 and feel 54! In fact, we've been out shopping most of the day, and my left foot hurts so much that I am limping around the house. You mentioned that you were used to standing on your feet all day a year ago. I used to be on my feet all the time too. All day long I would work standing on a floor that was basically carpet over concrete. That is when my feet started giving me grief.
I read an interesting post on foot health forum recently. It referred the original author (Darren) to www.podiatrynetwork.com for information about foot and arch pain. I went to the sight and basically it said that foot pain could be caused by tight calf muscles. If you are short (which I am - 5'2"), you will often sit with your feet and ankles tucked under you in your chair because your feet do not comfortably rest on the floor. This sitting position stresses the calf muscles and the tendons in the ball of the foot. The article recommended doing calf muscle exercises and wearing a shoe with a one ince heel (and not sitting like that). It also said that orthotics will typically not help this type of pain. If found this very interesting because it was really on point for me. You might want to go to the website and check it out. I had to go in four or five steps, but click on "Specify painful area of foot" or something along those lines. I am going to give the recommendations a try. We'll see what happens.
By the way, I did try the Birkenstock sandals - and oddly enough, I even had the Arizona style. I will tell you that for me, they did not work at all. In fact, I wore them as often as possible around the house for several days and finally, I just gave up. My feet and knees were worse than ever! Luckily I was able to return them because I had not worn them outside at all. At $110.00, I did not want to keep them if I could not even wear them. Good luck to you if you do buy them. I hope they help you more than they helped me.
