The hospital setting is for SICK people. Modern foot surgery should ONLY be done in the office under local anesthesia. The need for "screws" to correct hammertoes were part of the "dark ages" in podiatry. The modern procedure to correct your deformity only requires a little pin-head sized puncture on the top of the toe with no stitches, pins or screws involved. Your doctor obviously lacks the training to perform these procedures and was afraid to even inform you that alternative more appropriate procedures exist. My advice...cancel your surgery. Find a doctor that will do the surgery in his office without any stitches or "home-depot" hardware. A hammertoe procedure is a very simple 15 minute office procedure equivalent to a simple dental procedure. You don't go into a hospital outpatient center for a simple root canal! If your doctor's office is not clean enough to perform simple procedures then I don't blame him for doing the procedure in another location. Most modern doctors presently perform all foot surgery in their offices just wearing their everyday business suits and sterile gloves. Remember...It is your body..DON'T GET SCREWED!!!
