Bernie...I don't know where or who you learned your MIS procedures from. First of all no incisions are even used. The specialized surgical bur is introduced directly through the skin into the boney deformity,(bunion, hammertoe, bone spur, plantarflexed metatarsal, heel spur, haglunds deformity, etc.) avoiding any vital structures. The destruction that takes place from a long incision is far greater than a pin-head sized puncture on the skin. Time and time again practitioners that don't possess the skills to perform these procedures try to scare the public. These doctors will say its alright for them to "blindly" stick needles when giving anesthesia into the body or introducing arthroscopic equipment but not alright when performing minimally invasive procedures. All the public and Beth has to do is "google" either "minimally invasive surgery" or "minimal incision surgery" to learn more about the benefits and how these procedures are performed. Trying to scare the public on this forum into believing that MIS procedures are a form of butchery when in fact they are fast becoming the "gold standard" in surgery is pathetic. MIS foot surgeons have been performing these procedures exclusively for the last 30+ years. These doctors have the largest surgical practices in the country. If these were such terrible procedures they would have disappeared years ago instead of now becoming more and more prevalent due to public demand. It is easy to understand how most traditionally trained doctors in podiatry and medicine have become economically threatened by MIS doctors. It is not the other way around! It is just human ego, no matter what a person's profession, not to want to have to be re-training at the height of one's profession. If a doctor doesn't want to take the time and effort to learn the latest technology that is their loss and ultimately becomes their patient's. The general public has come to understand that Minimally Invasive Surgery means less trauma, less post-op pain and best of all, a quicker recovery time. There is no disputing that doctors competent by education and experience are performing minimally invasive procedures in nearly every medical specialty. The public reading this forum should be given the opportunity to research the surgical procedures modern medicine has available and not base their surgical decisions on uninformed practitioners using "scare tactics". If any doctors on this forum would like to present to the public any studies or articles showing MIS procedures should not be performed please present them. The public is fortunately able to see due to any internet search engines, like GOOGLE, what the truth is. Go ahead everybody...seach the web!!!!! The public will easily see through any crying that minimally invasive surgery is appropriate for EVERY field in medicine, just not...you guessed it...podiatry. |
