I found the articles both interesting and tedious to read in part because I have ADHD and was only diagnosed after more than 20 years in the workforce (no wonder why I ran through the halls at GE.) In the article "Building Champions," I found it both hilarious and sad to discover that my brain and a teacher's brain are different for educators want all teacher's to be the same, yet I do work well with Special Ed and failing students as well as other (regular students) in K-12. I did complete one of two years of teacher training, but am considered too different to be a teacher in today's environment.
Currently I am a substitute teacher working with students in K-12 in any subject and in multiple districts which range from rural to very urban and BOCES (a New York program). (I have degrees in Studio Arts, Mathematics, Computer Software, Accounting, and an MBA - how ADHD is that!) After reading the articles, I can see that many students would benefit from learning about Emotional Intelligence especially as they have been well trained by television and (violent) video games in drama and emotional extremes. In addition, this training has often been reinforced by their neighborhood and family cultures. Those of us over 50 know that television has changed in content from Jackie Gleason and Ed Sullivan into(some) nasty comedians and reality TV.
Learning something about Emotional Intelligence would at least allow students, especially in middle and high school, to see that there is a wide range in the level of human emotions and that they do not always have to be held hostage to the affect of usually being at on the maximum end of the range. |
