If you are going to have foot surgery I would also recommend that you choose one of the following two choices:
1) A podiatrist that is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
2) An orthopedic surgeon that has done a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery and has a practice dedicated to only surgery of the foot and ankle.
Once you do make the decision to have surgery, you must feel comfortable with the surgeon performing the procedure. Although Bernie Secoura believes that personality plays very little role in the selection process, I believe that ultimately you must feel comfortable with the surgeon you choose, though admittedly that does not make that doctor a good surgeon. If you get recommendations from friends, doctors or relatives regarding a particular doctor, it should be based on the surgical outcome. If the doctor is a great guy, that's simply a bonus. It is imperative to me that a patient is educated regarding the etiology (cause) of the problem and the treatment options. Once surgical intervention has been selected, it is your right as a patient to have a full understanding of the procedure and the inherent risks involved with the procedure. The post operative course and realistic post operative expectations should be discussed pre-operatively and if you are uncomfortable with your surgeon pre-operatively that is when it's time to make a decision to find another surgeon. You must have the confidence that your surgeon will be available in the event there is a problem. You must also feel comfortable at the facility the doctor is associated with. Many of my patients prefer surgery at a free standing surgical center vs. a hospital, therefore I give them that option. Your surgeon may also give that option. Make sure he doesn't force that option on you just because he may be a part owner of the surgical center. The bottom line is that you must feel comfortable with your doctor and have confidence in the abilities of the doctor and feel comfortable that the facility is also a quality facility. If you choose a podiatrist board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery or an orthopedic surgeon specializing in only foot and ankle surgery, you're off to a good start.
