Hi,
2 days after Thanksgiving I fell down our stairs holding my 2 year old, and suffered a major liz franc injury as well, fracturing 5 bones, breaking a toe, and tearing my liz franc ligament. I did not have surgery, as my fractures were not displaced, but I had 3 different casts over 2 1/2 months, being immobilized on the couch or bed. It was very disheartening and discouraging as you found as well.
When the cast came off, I was on crutches/wheelchair for a while, and progressing slowly. My biggest help by far has been PT. I have finally seen progression, although it is slow. My big toe is still a bit frozen, although more mobile than before. A huge help in decreasing pain was having him break up the calcium deposits in my foot that are a result of non-use for such a long period of time. I am working on a total gym to build up my calf and foot muscles again, and exercises of walking on my toes (I don't do that well yet!) and walking properly. He really worked on that because your hip will suffer as you have found if you keep walking the wrong way. I would really encourage you to find a competent PT. I now only occasionally need vicodin. I think the last time I took it was when I went to Disney world!!
I was also told to expect swelling, etc. for about a year. But it is hard to really give any exact prognosis, as mentioned before.
Here is a really great, informative message board:

I wish you all the prayers and luck in the world, and just know you are not crazy, abnormal, or chronically ill!! You can get past this!!!
