Perf tests for that hull and L4 200 are on the Merc web site - http://www.mercurymarine.com/look_deeper/boat_house_bulletin.php?ID=109&Filter=3
I don't see the 228 and L6 225 listed, but there is a Triton 225cc and L6 225 which should be reasonably close for guesstimates.
Be sure you are wired to Merc/Verado specs with dedicated starting battery along with a dedicated house battery. The only thing that should be connected to the start batt is the engine, nothing else.
My 2006 150 Verado and 206CC Sea Pro have run fine for 1.5 years so far. My boat came rigged with Teleflex analogue gauges which I swapped out for Smartcraft gauges. Huge improvement. My analogue tach gauge had started to behave like yours before I swapped to SC. Forget the digital fear. You'll love DTS.
If you have Smartcraft gauges, connect your GPS to it and reconfig your gauges to read GPS data and not pitot speed.
PM me if you need to. Glen knows how to get up with me. I can offer some tips about the Sea Pro and Verado that will help. It may take some dectective work, but verify how your wiring runs, if for no other reason to familiarize yourself with your boat.
