I need to have bunion surgery done this summer. I would like to address this to those who had the procedure done. Which would you recommend..an Orthopdeic who performs foot and ankle surgery OR a DPM, FACFAS (podiatric surgeon)?? Thank you in advance for reading my post and for your advice. :) PS..I was told by an DPM, that my recovery time will be 4 weeks on crutches and 4 weeks in a boot because of the severity of my bunion?

That's a question that is impossible to answer with any degree of accuracy unless one is able to assess the skills of the individuals in question. There are fine doctors and not so fine doctors of in both disciplines. It would be like asking which baseball team were better, an American League team or a National League team, without knowing anything of their players or their record.
Check out their training, their board certification, the quality of the hospital in which they practice, their standing within the local medical community, their history of disciplinary actions by their state board and their history of malpractice if available in the state in which you live.
One thing NOT to consider is their personality. It does not matter how congenial they are when they have a scalpel in their hands. But be certain that your doctor treats your pre-surgical questions seriously, and explains what he/she intends to do and what the anticipated results, as well as the possible downsides of the procedure may be . . . in language that you can easily understand.
Given good skills by the surgeon, recovery time depends on the exact nature of the procedure, the post-surgical response of the patient and the occurance of unintended complications or the lack thereof. The degree of severity of the pre-surgical condition should have no bearing on the recovery time unless it requires a procedure which inherently necessitates a longer recovery period.
