Ever wonder why you don’t use all that zoom on your camera? Your camera says something like 10x optical and 15x digital zoom, or something like that. So who uses the digital zoom? Well, no one that knows anything about cameras! Your digital zoom is a pixel robber as well as a stealer of resolution. Pixels make the basis of your pictures, the more you can cram into the same size photo the higher the resolution. HD in pictures is around 2000x2500 Per Square inch in an 8x10. But remember you have to have a printer good enough to print 2400 DPI to get an equally as good photo printed out. If you are showing them on a computer screen the 72 DPI is about as good as you will get before it doesn't matter. With digital when you look at your picture in the viewer you are seeing it at 72DPI and then when you look at it on a big screen it doesn't look so hot! Always go for as many Pixels as you can afford! With this in mind you are-camera cropping your picture with Digital Zoom.

Take a picture with your camera and then look at it on the camera screen now take a hold of the zoom control on your camera and zoom in. This is what you are doing with the Digital Zoom before you take the picture. In doing so you are pre-cropping your picture and giving up pixels! So never use this feature, if you want to zoom do it afterwards in your photo-editing program, where it can be controlled, and you can see how much degradation is acceptable to you. There are a lot of really useless controls that are put on digital cameras and most are just bells and whistles that you can live without. When you set up your camera turn as many of these off, you will have better pictures and even save some battery life that might come in handy towards the end of your dive.

If you decide to use any of these features try them out first, you might learn something before you waste your time. You might come up with something arty, but then again you can do that with your editing program. So it boils down to take the best picture possible with your basic settings and take that image to your darkroom and you will have a better image.
