Putting it in the cross hairs! This week’s tip is on composition of your picture. There are two ways to better your composition, one is to compose a better picture in the viewfinder, and the other is by cropping. Lets look at the easiest first; composition through the lens is the best way to frame your picture. The way I do it is to think of the viewfinder as a tic-tac-toe board # with the cross hairs being in four places on the lens view. Upper right, upper left, lower right, and lower left and with this in mind you try to put the focal point or subject in the middle of these cross hairs. This makes a better picture in the sense of the special relationship of your subject to the fore and background. Think as the cross hairs suggest in thirds as example a beach shoot where the water, beach, and ski all in the picture. If you use a one third two thirds ratio you will have a breath taking photo as opposed to cutting everything in half. It is just more natural to the eye and creates a better special relationship in the picture.

The second way to do this to save a picture is by cropping. You can crop your photos to make the composition better, but remember your throwing away pixels and hopping you have enough to spare. But having said that there are times when it is your only choice if you didn’t take the time to do it in the viewfinder.
