A quick not here, when you are on a day boat I go about it the same way just scaled why down. On a ½, ¾, or day boat don’t take the kitchen sink only those things that you will need. Even leave the bags and boxes in the car or at the shop or the room. Simplify your life on a short trip and concentrate on the task at hand, just be prepared and organized.

Also I set my strobes on half power as I am descending because this setting is also a good place to start.

Now I am on the reef and I am looking for what I need to shoot. If I am doing a special shoot like Garden eels or Blennys I will stake out my spot and take the time it takes or until I run out of bottom time. So now I have got all my pictures and I head back to the boat or the shore and the rinse tank and then the Camera Table where I have established my space on the table. I then dry my equipment and set up for the next dive including batteries that need changing or charging. Now I take my Card out of my camera and use the computer to down load it to my portable drive and sometimes depending on weather it is my computer or a resort computer leave it in a file on the desk top. That way I have put them in two places not just one. I unload into a dated file each time I open the camera or switch cards. That way if bad stuff happens you only lose the info on that card for that dive. I don’t believe in leaving a lot of pictures on the card. You should start fresh just like your batteries.

Now I have my pictures in two locations for back up in files that identified by date and Dive number. Example would be 7-23-07 1st dive and by doing that I can use my log from my computer if I need more info and sometimes the dive boat or resort will provide a ton of info at the end of the week for you that will give you location, times, dive site, and conditions. So now if I have to reconstruct all the info I have a great start.

If I have time I open each file and look for the ones I will delete and do that first. It helps make the size of the files smaller and more manageable. Now on my second pass I am looking for the outstanding ones. If I am doing a special critter I will put all of them in a sub-folder named after it. That folder stays in the by date folder. Now I make another pass to see if any need a little attention with Photo Shop and some cropping. While in PS I will make two copies one with a resolution of 300dpi in TIFF in a Sub-File named Finished. Then a second copy with a resolution of 72dpi in Jpeg in a Sub-Folder named Web Ready. That why I don’t have to go back later and reopen the files and get them ready for the web site or emailing.

I carry a portable Hard Drive that is 160gigs and sometimes my laptop depending on where I am going. Some places allow you access to a computer and a temp file for back up. One week will see a file about 8 to 10gigs give or take. So you have plenty of room to down load the desktop file as one file to your Hard Drive at the end of the week if you are using someone else’s computer.

Stay tuned next week for part three!
