Photo tip of the week!

Being prepared! In the digital world we have the best of chances to get that really cool shot! But what do you need? The 6 P’s: Prior Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance! Well what does that mean, I have all the right equipment to shoot Whale Sharks but I go to Catalina Island to shot them! Wrong, bad Planning or I go to Utila or Baja The wrong time of year, again poor planning. So now lets say I am where I need to be at the right time of the year for the creature I am trying to shot and I jump in to find My batteries are dead! Just as important as all the equipment and being at the right place at the right time is making sure your batteries are charged and that you change them before every single dive! If you have dedicated batteries, buy the second set and have them charging while you are diving. It is easy to get lazy about changing batteries, after all I didn’t take that many, and Murphy’s Law will always be there to remind you to change those batteries for the next dive.

In addition you want to get into good maintenance habit for your camera between each dive. In addition to batteries you want to think about checking your O-Rings, checking each control including your Strobe. The one other thing most forget to do is CLEAN YOUR Lens even when you’re taking it into the water. A spot on top is a spot below.

One more thing to remember is for those of you with Lens attachments that are called “Wet Swap” or “Changeable underwater” Lenses remember to either put them on underwater or remove and replace them underwater. This will get ride of air between the lenses from the surface and if you fan the lens with your free hand you will break up the little bubbles that can ruin a great shot!

So remember the 6 P’s and be ready even if it takes a little more effort. In the end it will be worth the time and effort you put into it.
