How do you set your strobe or strobes so that they are ready to shot? I have watched students learning Underwater Photography who spot a fish or some critter that they want to shot in the worst way. They rush over and snap away while their flash is pointed way past the subject. Many times they look at the LCD screen and have to shot again if the critter is still there. So I teach that you need to set your camera up as you sink or settle to your depth so that you are ready if you see something or it swims by. So I have a simple trick that seems to work well. While you are dropping down and you have your ears under control take your camera and point it at yourself square on toward your face and out of the corner of your eye make sure your strobe is pointing in the same place. Do this with you arms fully extended and you will also have a good idea of the effective range of your flash. One more step that I do is snap a picture to see if your strobe or strobes are working and to check your settings. With the camera pointing up you will have a good example of your exposure setting, even if it is automatic, you will get a good indication as to what your settings on both camera and flash should be. If you cruise some of my pictures you will see some self-portraits taken this way. Sometimes there not too bad!
