This week’s tip has been mentioned before, but I still see it happen so much I feel it is worth driving it home again! Stay still, that’s right keep the motion of your camera to a minimum. This is really important for those of you shooting auto cameras that set the shutter speed low to make up for low light. If you are kicking by a part of the reef and see something don’t point your camera at it and shot while you cruse by. You will get results that will disappoint you and it will look like it is out of focus. It is motion blur and it is made worse by the movement of the ocean, the subject, and yourself! Hold still and frame your picture or let it go. You need to set up just like photographers do on land. Sometimes you have to use great buoyancy and great timing to get the great shot and others you need a tripod or monopod.

Now you have to access the reef and the impact of such tools. I never advocate the destruction of a living thing to get the picture. I have seen old time Underwater Photographers stand on the reef, break pieces off, lay on it, and generally treat it like their own to get the picture. I have always taken pride in the fact that I have never harmed the reef or the subject getting the picture. I believe in having the picture as natural as possible as it occurred in nature with no or very little staging. Frankly some of my shots could be better if I were to “dig out” the critter or remove it from its natural area, but I am trying to capture the beauty as it occurs in nature. To me that is definition of a nature photographer, and believe me that many shoots are set up that you see in magazines and movies. I must say I am not completely against this if nothing is hurt and it is important for the story or say a fish ID book etc. It is just not my preferred style and I take some pride in my methods. This is why I invented Reed’s Rod and it is being excepted wherever I have gone by the local DM’s as they recognize that it helps lessen the impact on “Their Reefs” and makes their job easier. As of this last trip there are now three more Reed’s Rods in the hands of local DM’s.
